***  [[[  CANADIAN TREASURE HUNT WEBQUEST  ]]]  ***

Several readers have suggested Web sites to help teach
the earliest grades about Canada.  Here is one that fills
the bill: a Webquest for Grade 2-4 students that sends
them on a Web treasure hunt to determine a mystery Canadian
location.  It should work if two or three students are
at each networked computer.  If you have fewer computers,
add a station like the wall map activity below.

The Webquest engages the students in reading as it
sends them to different Canadian Web sites for clues.
To be successful, students have to follow instructions
*exactly* as printed on screen -- a fine skill
developer at this age!  For some Grade 2s the reading
level will be high, but the sites seem appropriate for
Grades 3 and 4, mixing attractive yet small graphics
with easy-reading text.  All selected sites appear
permanent enough for use this year and next, and are
useful to know about in their own right.

Teachers should follow the online Webquest with a more
concrete representation of the knowledge gained, like
placing pins on a wall map or determining the distance
in kilometres from one location to the next.

Methinks that this Webquest would work for students
outside Canada as well, assuming that the curriculum
for 8- through 10-year-olds includes exposure to
another country.  Its author invites other classrooms
to participate with his class in the Webquest.

The Canadian Treasure Hunt was designed by Darrell
Letourneau, who teaches at Forest Park Elementary School
in (big, big hint here) Nanaimo, British Columbia; he
was assisted by students in his class and in two other
schools.  It's in the Project Gallery at "Profiling
Canada", Statistics Canada's contribution to SchoolNet's
GrassRoots program.  You can view other submissions at
