The CAAS believes all students who graduate from provincial and
territorial schools across Canada should reach a minimum standard
of awareness, knowledge, analysis and appreciation of Aboriginal
Peoples':
- perspectives,
- histories,
- cultures,
and
- views
on contemporary issues.
On the following pages are the learning "expectations"
or "outcomes" we have developed. They elaborate the nature and
extent of understanding we believe should be required for all
Canadian high-school graduates.
The CAAS's position is that this learning must begin in the earliest
years of school. The foundation for this awareness must occur
in elementary school with additional mandatory and optional opportunities
to acquire knowledge and analysis skills in the secondary years.
These learning expectations are a cornerstone of our Student Awareness
Study. The findings from the SAS are a key element of CAAS' report,
Learning About Walking in Beauty: Placing
Aboriginal Perspectives in Canadian Classrooms.
